You may have seen or read about a story presented on the ABC's 'Lateline' program recently. It portrayed the TFS in a negative light and may have caused unnecessary alarm.

The ABC story, and a few others that have been published over the last year or so, may have given the impression that there have been many complications or unfortunate surgical results with TFS. That is NOT the case. If your patients have had TFS surgery and, like most patients, have experienced a significant improvement in their quality of life, there is no reason to worry.

The TFS is safe when used by skilled surgeons trained in its use; and a number of leading surgeons both in Australia and overseas strongly and enthusiastically believe in using TFS in appropriate cases. It has been successfully used around the world for more than a decade, and the techniques for its use continue to improve.

As with all surgical procedures there is a slight risk of complications - either during or post-surgery - and a very small proportion of patients may experience adverse reactions. However, for many women suffering from stress incontinence or pelvic organ prolapse, the potential benefits outweigh the risks.

Contrary to some media reports, TFS has been thoroughly scrutinised and numerous independent scientific studies have been published in leading medical journals affirming its effectiveness and safety.

TFS has recently been audited and certified for use in Europe and we are confident that our current appeal against the cancellation of registrations in Australia will be successful in the near future.
